Installation Requirements
Plug-in vs. Hardwired
A plugged-in EVSE is a charging station that plugs into a 240V outlet (the same outlet a clothing dryer uses). Since plug-in units are portable, the only installation required is for the wall mounting station. Use the supplied screws to screw the mount into your wall surface. Once the bracket is mounted, you can slide the EVSE charger in and out easily; allowing you to use it at home and also detach it easily to take it with you.
If you don't have a 240V outlet in your desired charging location, contact a local pro and request a NEMA 14-50R outlet installation with #6AWG copper wire, and a 240V, 50A circuit. Make sure you request that the outlet is installed within one foot of where you want your EVSE station located.
A hardwired EVSE station requires a certified electrician to connect the station in a protected, NEMA-compliant enclosure. The list below details typical installation requirements for a hardwired unit:
- 2 pole, 40A breaker
- #8AWG copper wire with 2 conductors and a ground. If single conductor THHN wire is used, the ground may be #12AWG per NEC 250.122 calculations
For an outdoor installation, please add the following:
- NEMA rated outdoor junction box with gasketed cover
Recommend against GFI circuit breaker
Please, only use the pre-drilled opening on the bottom of the box for hardwire applications. We cannot honor the warranty if any other holes are added to the unit.
A fusible disconnect may be required within 6' of your EV charger device installation, please consult your local code.
Wi-Fi Optional
Wi-Fi is NOT required to use the EV charging station. However, you will need a Wi-Fi connection to use smart charging features, including:
- Access JuiceNet app via Smartphone or web from anywhere.
- Track energy usage, allowing you to view your charging history and extract accurate energy data.
- See real-time data
- Start & Stop charging remotely
- View cost savings per charging session
Your charging station will act as a standard charging unit in absence of Wi-Fi. If you set it up on Wi-Fi but then disconnect it, any schedules or limits you set when connected to the station may remain even if the station is not connected to Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi memory will be erased upon unplugging from power and will be reinstated once connected to Wi-Fi again.
Load Sharing
If you have more than one EV, you can set up your two (or more) units to share one electrical circuit. Say, you have only 40A capacity in your panel but have two vehicles charging simultaneously. You can program your units to never exceed 40A combined draw. If only one car is charging, it gets the full 40A of current. When the second car shows up, the current gets shared 20A / 20A between the two. When one of the cars finishes charging, the remaining car ramps back up to 40A.
Charge Time Table
This Charge Time Table shows approximately how much electric range a typical EV can recover for charging stations with different capacities. Level 1 charging stations use 120 V, while Level 2 charging stations use 240 V. Charging capacity is rated in kilowatts (kW), while the vehicle's battery pack is rated in kilowatt-hours (kWh).
